This year marks the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Korean Armistice Agreement, which ended over three years of fighting on the Korean Peninsula. In 1950, Communist North Korean forces invaded South Korea. Canadian Forces came together with fellow UN Member States to defend South Korea’s sovereignty. This important milestone will be commemorated with events in Canada and in the Republic of Korea.
It is a time to mourn the 516 Canadian service members who never made it home and honour the more than 26,000 who served, including those who were injured. They bravely put their lives at risk to uphold the ideals of peace and freedom.
A commemorative memorial was constructed in Aurora’s Peace Park as a collaborative project between Veterans Affairs Canada, the Town of Aurora, the Township of King, the Town of Stouffville, and the AuroraLegionBranch385 and was unveiled in March 2023.
